Looking For My Forever Home, oil on canvas
ArtPrize wrapped up this past weekend. Although I didn’t win any of the prizes, it was a wonderful experience. I really enjoyed seeing all the artists’ ideas come to life in their art. Made some new artsy friends too. Hope to see everyone next year!

We attended an open house yesterday at our venue at Cornerstone Church with the ArtPrize volunteers and the other artists. Met a lot of the artists, read their stories and viewed all the wonderful artwork. Our coordinator, Dawn, has done a wonderful job.
Hey everyone, this is such an exciting time for me to be included in this year’s ArtPrize! Scroll to the end to see how to sign up and “favorite” me. There’s a lot of information here including: my painting installed at the venue, a numbered picture of the animals in my painting with corresponding species names and endangered status, a fact sheet on endangered species and my bio. Thanks for stopping by!!

ANIMAL FACT SHEET
THREATS
Endangered species are subject to many threats including but not limited to:
Climate change
Poaching
Habitat Loss
Disease
War and unrest which causes displacement from habitat as well as bushmeat (the meat of any African animal endangered or not) for displaced people, including animals like gorillas.
African animal endangered or not) for displaced people.
THE SAD TRUTH
Pangolins are the most trafficked animal in the world.
Only two female Northern White Rhinos are left in the world.
There are more tigers in captivity than in the wild.
Polar bears are dying out due to lack of sea ice floes for hunting seals due to global warming. Two thirds of the population will be gone by 2050.
There are only 186 Mexican Gray Wolves left in the wild.
Only 100-160 Florida Panthers are left in the wild.
There are 10 red wolves left in the wild.
Bactrian camels are the 8th most endangered animal in the world with only 950 left in the wild.
Current number of orangutans is 14% of what it once was.
Only 5000 Giant Anteaters remain in the wild
Only 2000 Grevy’s Zebra remained in 2016
Fewer than 100 Javan Rhinos remain in the wild.
Hairy Nosed Wombat is one of Australia’s most endangered marsupial and one of the world’s most endangered mammals.
Koala numbers are estimated at 47,000-80,000 which seems like a lot but there were 10 million in 1788.
Okapi population fell 40% between 1995 and 2007.
Only 45 Red Wolves remain in the wild with about 200 in zoo breeding programs.
Prezwalski’s Horse went from extinct in the wild status in 2005 to endangered in 2011 with human intervention.
THE GOOD NEWS
It’s not all bad news. Eastern Mountain Gorillas numbers have recently increased due to conservation efforts.
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums participate in the Species Survival Plan Program and have a Breeding and Transfer Plan to have a diverse biologically sound population in zoos. The Black Footed Ferret, Prezwalski’s Horse, California Condor, Golden Lion Tamarin, Oregon Spotted Frog, Red Wolf, Wyoming Toad, Karner Blue Butterfly, etc., have all been reintroduced through their program.
There are many great organizations that are helping endangered species like World Wildlife Fund, the Sierra Club, Defenders of Wildlife, In Defense of Animals, Wolf Conservation Center, etc.
Conservation measures for the Iberian Lynx increased the remaining 94 individuals in 2000 to 1111 in 2021. Conservation works!
WHAT YOU CAN TO TO HELP
You can help in small ways that add up to big improvements such as:
DonatIng to organizations that protect and help endangered species
Not using single use plastics
Carpooling
Riding your bike
Turning down the thermostat
Investing in and using solar, wind, thermal, or hydroelectric power
Skip eating red meat one day a week to reduce methane emissions.

My artwork for ArtPrize is entitled, “Good Stewards of the Earth“. It is a 6′ x 5′ oil on canvas of endangered and extinct animals. The exctinct megafauna and recently extinct animals are portrayed as ghosts in the clouds. I hope it will inspire people to take action on climate change, poaching, illegal animal and animal parts trade. Creating this painting helped me work through my grief from losing my son to Muscular Dystrophy last year. This painting was done in his honor.
